Private Lessons

“Talented, refreshing, and passionate. These are the words I'd use to describe Kelly. I'm still working on the talented part, but working with Kelly has given me a renewed passion for jazz and a new refreshing twist to my music. She's a phenomenal teacher and I always find myself looking forward to next week's lesson.”
- Cason K., NYU student (jazz piano)

Kelly AshI teach private lessons in voice, piano, and musicianship (which can include: songwriting, composition, theory, improvisation, etc.) All levels. My students range widely in style and age, and I strive to create a custom-built lesson plan to cover whatever the student would like to learn or work on. Some students work on songwriting, some study both piano and voice, some are learning to read music and improve knowledge of theory, and others just want to have fun singing.

  • Voice lessons (all levels, any genre): we will work on developing repertoire, musicianship, styles, phrasing, "finding your voice", and strengthening vocal technique and production.
  • Piano lessons (beginning to intermediate): basic technique on the instrument, reading music, or jazz piano.
  • Musicianship (all levels, any genre): songwriting and crafting process, basic theory and patterns within music, reading music, improvisation, advanced theory, transcription, rhythmic development, etc.

Reviews (piano):

"Kelly based our lessons around my specific interests. She is incredibly talented, knowledgeable, and professional. I would confidently recommend Kelly to a player of any level, beginner to advanced. The lessons were creatively stimulating, and a joy to go to every week." - Justin C., NYU student (jazz/ pop piano)

"As someone used to playing classical music, I found Kelly to be very helpful in transitioning into pop piano. She was very supportive and encouraging, and offered useful insight into thinking like a pop pianist. I would highly recommend her!"
- Linda W., NYU student (pop piano)

"Learning piano under Kelly was great! She taught me new ways of reading music sheets by pointing out patterns and chord progressions in the music. She has a lot of patience and talent which make her an amazing teacher!"
- Jennifer Y., NYU student (pop piano)

Reviews (voice):

"Kelly was a wonderful teacher to work with. She immediately set me at ease. Her sense of professionalism and obvious experience set the stage for me to want to master similar skills and to see them as achievable. I liked working with her and was impressed by her ability to select repertoire that was fresh, challenging, and uniquely appealing to my sound and musical style. The songs she selected for me continue to be staples in my sets, which is especially interesting because they are not among the typical favorites of the jazz repertoire. Kelly was also very creative as a teacher. She developed vocaleses and whole courses that went beyond the bounds of standard vocal instruction."
- Tessa F., jazz voice student

"Kelly is an excellent teacher! She is always well-prepared and enthusiastic. I love learning about different vocal techniques and I love that Kelly really encourages you to be unique and find out how you like to sing. She not only offers private jazz vocal lessons but she is constantly initiating new creative classes for jazz singers. Kelly has one of the most beautiful jazz singing voices I have ever heard and it is a honor to work with such an accomplished jazz vocalist." - Marie Bullano, jazz voice student

“The thing I most loved about the class was working with really amazing musicians-- including Kelly, Mikaela and the band. Being around all of that talent inspired me.”
- Tara K.

"Kelly and Mikaela have a great understanding of the needs of each singer. I appreciated their skill in tailoring curriculum, and, meeting one-one-one with each singer. My biggest amazement was how they facilitated the composing of lyrics and music with singers in the matter of minutes. I thought, 'So that's how it's done!"
